A practice, not a product.
Sarmad is an old word. In Arabic and Persian it means the ceaseless, the without beginning or end, the part of a thing that does not expire. Wellness industries sell you a better week. We are interested in the part of you that outlasts the week.
Sarmadwell is a founder-led inner work practice. It is built on a single premise: a human life is not one thing that can be optimised, but seven things that must be tended. Purpose. Relationships. Health. Work. Intellect. Play. Rest. Starve any one of them long enough and the others begin to compensate, then to strain, then to fail. Most people can name exactly which one they have been starving. Most people have never been asked.
We do not offer relief. Relief is what you already know how to buy. We offer the far less comfortable thing: an honest look, a real confrontation, and the structure to do something about it once the looking is done.
Everything we build sits on that framework. The teachings, the journeys, the ceremonies, the silence. Seven dimensions, entered through three doors.
The industry sells escape. We are not in the escape business. You cannot leave a life you have not yet looked at.
We built the thing we could not find.
Between us we have sat in a lot of rooms. Some were beautiful. Some were extractive. Almost all of them shared the same flaw: they were engineered to make you feel something for a few days and then return you, unchanged, to the exact conditions that sent you there.
The feeling is easy to manufacture. Candles, breath, a facilitator with a soft voice, a group of strangers crying on schedule. What is hard is the part nobody sells, because it does not photograph well: the honest inventory, the uncomfortable naming, the specific and unglamorous work of going home and changing something.
So we stopped attending and started building. Sarmadwell is founder-led on purpose. Not scaled, not franchised, not delivered by rotating contract facilitators reading from a manual. Small groups, held by the two people whose names are on the door.
What we refuse
No pseudoscience dressed as ancient wisdom. No promises of transformation that ignore the life you return to. No spiritual bypassing of things that are actually psychological, medical, or financial. No borrowing sacred traditions we have no relationship with. When we say something is grounded in evidence, we mean it. When we say something is poetry, we say that too. We do not blur the line, because blurring the line is the industry's oldest trick.
Mind, body, soul. Three ways in, one framework.
The seven dimensions do not respond to a single method. Some yield to inquiry. Some only move when the body moves. Some require a silence most people have never sat inside. So we built three portals, each with its own logic, its own terrain, and its own demands on you.
Three portals, entered separately or together.
Each portal runs on its own. You do not have to take all three, and you do not have to start with a retreat. Most people meet us first through a single workshop or a single journey, and find the rest from there.
Workshops and teachings
Sessions on the seven dimensions, run online and on the ground. Practices, games, tests and structured inquiry, taken one dimension at a time. Some are single evenings. Some are longer containers held over weeks with a small group.
Excursions and adventure programmes
Journeys into wild terrain, built as inner work rather than sightseeing. Short excursions and longer expeditions, always in uncommercial places, always small.
Ceremony and solitude containers
Held sessions of breath, sound and sacred solitude. Single ceremonies, and longer containers with preparation before and integration after, because ceremony without integration is entertainment.
The founder-led retreat, twice a year
Twice a year the three portals converge into a single arc, led entirely by the founders. This is the deepest form of the work and the only one that holds all three at once. The first is The Sinai Odyssey.
We announce as things open.
Workshops, excursions and containers are announced when they are ready rather than scheduled a year ahead. Two ways to hear about them: follow the work on Instagram, or have it come to you.
Metanoia is a Greek word that got mistranslated for two thousand years. It was rendered as repentance, which suggests guilt and grovelling. What it actually means is closer to this: a change of mind so total that you cannot see the old way anymore. Not a resolution. A reorganisation.
That is the portal. Not a technique for feeling better about your life, but a structured examination of it, dimension by dimension, until the honest picture emerges. Sometimes the picture is reassuring. Usually it is not. In our experience people already know which dimension is failing. What they lack is a language for it, a witness to it, and any real pressure to act.
Nothing here is mystical. This is psychology, honest inquiry, and the refusal to let a comfortable answer stand.
Seven dimensions of a life.
Not a wheel of wellness. A diagnostic. Each dimension carries one question that most people avoid answering directly.
Not religion, unless it is. This is the dimension of orientation: whether your days point somewhere, whether you have a sense of anything larger than your own comfort, and whether you would still know who you were if your role disappeared tomorrow.
The most reliably predictive dimension in the longitudinal research, and the one most quietly neglected by ambitious people. Depth over breadth. The difficult true conversation you keep postponing is usually the whole assignment.
Sleep, movement, food, and the nervous system underneath all three. Not aesthetics, not discipline as self-punishment. Whether your body is a place you inhabit or an inconvenience you manage between meetings.
Most people do not have a work problem. They have a consent problem: they never explicitly agreed to the life the work is building. This dimension asks what enough looks like, and how honest you are about the distance to it.
Curiosity is the first thing exhaustion eats. A mind that only consumes what is professionally useful becomes narrow in a way that is difficult to notice from the inside and obvious from the outside.
Play is the dimension adults surrender first and mourn longest. Anything done for its own sake, badly, without an audience. If every activity in your week is instrumental, this is your thinnest soil.
Distinct from sleep and distinct from collapse. Rest is deliberate stillness taken before you are empty rather than after. Most high performers do not rest. They alternate between output and recovery, which is not the same thing.
Practices, games, tests, insight.
The method is not lecture. It is a sequence of practices, games, tests and structured exercises designed to produce introspective insight, one dimension at a time. Games because a game gets past the answer you have rehearsed. Tests because a number you did not expect is harder to argue with than a feeling. Practices because insight that is never practised is just a nice evening.
The aim is not to excel at one dimension. It is balance across all seven. That is the whole thesis: true wellness is holistic, and a life that is exceptional in two dimensions and starved in five is not a well life, however it looks from outside. Metanoia works toward the balanced approach, and it starts by showing you honestly where the balance currently is.
Off retreat
Workshops and teachings, delivered online and on the ground. One dimension at a time, in small groups, with practices to take away and return with. This is the ongoing form of the work and where most people begin.
On retreat
A concentrated and condensed version of the entire framework. All seven dimensions tackled in depth over consecutive days, through activities, mental games and sustained inquiry, with the other two portals carrying what talking cannot reach.
Where is your life thin?
Thirty five questions. Roughly eight minutes. No scores are shared with anyone. Answer as you are, not as you intend to be.
We send the reading and occasional letters about the work. One click unsubscribes you. We do not sell or share your address.
There are things you cannot think your way into. The body has its own intelligence and it does not respond to insight. It responds to load, to cold water, to a long climb in the dark, to the specific humility of being small in a landscape that has been there for forty million years.
Nomade is the portal of movement. Not fitness, not adventure tourism, not a photogenic sunrise with a yoga mat. Real terrain, entered on its own terms, because wild places do something to a person that a room cannot. They strip the performance. Within an hour of walking, nobody in the group cares what anyone does for a living, and more importantly, neither do you.
We do not go where the buses go. Our routes are uncommercial by design: hidden ground, quiet valleys, places that are difficult enough to reach that almost nobody does. Mountains and open desert. Ancient temples carved into rock by hands and by weather. Wild sea. The mystical sites that sit off every itinerary because they were never built for visitors in the first place.
A landscape that does not care about you is the fastest cure for the belief that everything depends on you.
Movement as inquiry.
Nomade runs its own adventure programmes throughout the year, from short excursions to longer expeditions. Each one is complete in itself. On retreat, the same terrain work becomes concentrated and merges with the other two portals into a single arc.
Physical honesty
Terrain gives feedback that flattery cannot override. Where your body is strong and where it has been neglected becomes obvious, quickly, and without judgement.
Uncommercial ground
Hidden places rather than landmarks. Small groups, local guiding partnerships, and routes chosen for what they do to a person rather than how they photograph.
Deliberate discomfort
Cold, distance, early starts, no signal. Not suffering for its own sake, but enough friction to interrupt the autopilot you arrived in.
Walking dialogue
Some of the hardest conversations are easiest side by side, in motion, with somewhere to look other than a face. Much of the Metanoia work happens out here.
Khalwa is the Arabic word for sacred seclusion. A deliberate withdrawal from company, noise and role, undertaken not to hide but to hear. The practice is older than any of the traditions that claim it, and the pattern repeats everywhere: the person goes into the desert alone, and the person who comes back is not quite the same one who went in.
This is not incidental to the region we work in. The deserts of Egypt and the Sinai are where the practice was formalised. Ascetics went into these mountains and stayed for decades. Sufi orders built entire architectures of solitude, with a khalwa as an actual room, a small dark cell where a seeker sat until something gave way. The desert fathers did the same thing in the same century in the same landscape. Before all of them, this land held mystery traditions concerned with what survives the body.
They disagreed about almost everything. They agreed about this: revelation does not arrive in company, in noise, or on demand. It arrives in the gap. And the gap has to be made deliberately, because modern life is engineered so that it never occurs by accident.
Everyone who ever came back with something to say went somewhere quiet first. Nobody has ever had an epiphany while scrolling.
What happens in the gap.
Khalwa is the least explainable of the three portals and the one people most often name afterwards as the reason they came. It runs as single ceremonies and as longer held containers, and it is built from four elements, each of them ancient, each practised carefully and without theatre.
Solitude
Extended periods alone, without conversation, task, or device. Long enough that the initial restlessness passes and something underneath it becomes audible. For most people the first hours are the hardest thing on the entire journey. For most people the hours after that are the reason they return.
Breath
Conscious breathing practice, held over sustained sessions. Breath is the only autonomic system you can take manual control of, which makes it the oldest and most direct lever we have on state. Done properly it opens material that talking cannot reach. Done carelessly it is just hyperventilation with music, which is why it is facilitated and never improvised.
Sound
Voice, drum, resonance and the long tones that desert traditions have used for as far back as the record goes. Sound bypasses the analytical mind, which is precisely its use: it moves the body and the emotions before the intellect has assembled its defence.
Sacramental herbal medicine
Ceremonial preparations from traditional herbs, taken in a held container with intention, preparation and integration. These are gentle, legal, and used in the manner they have been used in this region for centuries: as an offering rather than a shortcut, opening a threshold toward the divine rather than manufacturing an experience. Nothing here is a substitute for the solitude. It is an accompaniment to it, and it is entirely optional.
Reverence without theatre.
We do not perform other people's traditions. Where a practice comes from a living lineage, we say so, and where we work with it we do so through people who belong to it. Everything offered in Khalwa is legal, screened for medical and psychological suitability, and preceded by preparation and followed by integration. Ceremony without integration is entertainment. We are not interested in entertainment.
11 November 2026 · South Sinai, Egypt
Everything we have built, in one place, for the first time.
Twice a year we run a founder-led retreat where the three portals converge. This is the first. On 11 November 2026, twelve people will begin seven days in the South Sinai, led entirely by the founders from the first evening to the last morning, with no rotating staff and no outsourced facilitation.
It is called the Initiation Cohort because it is the first, and because you do not arrive at it, you enter it.
The Odyssey is where the portals stop being separate. Metanoia supplies the framework and the inquiry: seven dimensions worked through in depth, through teachings, games and honest examination. Nomade supplies the terrain, because the body has to be in it for any of this to hold. Khalwa supplies the gap: solitude, breath, sound and ceremony, in the landscape where that practice was first formalised.
They are not three activities on an itinerary. They are one arc, and the last part of it exists entirely to convert what happened into something specific you will actually do when you go home.
A rhythm, held across changing ground.
Twelve strangers arrive and are met by the founders. That first evening is the only slow one. From there the days take a rhythm and the ground beneath them keeps changing, because almost nothing about this week is stationary.
Mornings belong to Metanoia: a teaching and a game, working through the dimensions while the mind is clearest. Midday belongs to Nomade and to activity, moving through the terrain the day has brought you to. Evenings belong to Khalwa, and to games of a different kind, as the light goes and the group settles into something quieter than it was that morning.
You will sleep in more than one kind of place and wake to more than one kind of view. The hospitality across the week is genuinely exceptional and is not the point, though people mention it for years afterwards. What accumulates is the rhythm itself: mind in the morning, body in the day, soul at night, repeated across shifting ground until the seven dimensions stop being a diagram and start being a description of your own life.
The full itinerary, including terrain, logistics and what to bring, is shared with applicants who move forward.
Who this is for.
We select twelve people because twelve is the largest number that can still hold a real conversation. Selection is not about prestige. It is about fit, and about protecting the room for everyone in it.
This is for you if
- You already know which dimension of your life has gone thin, and you are tired of knowing it without doing anything.
- You have done well by external measures and it has not resolved the thing you thought it would resolve.
- You want to be told the truth more than you want to be made comfortable.
- You are willing to be physically uncomfortable: distance, changing ground, early starts, cold nights, no signal.
- You can be alone with yourself for extended periods, or you are genuinely willing to find out.
- You understand that the week is preparation and the year afterwards is the work.
- You can hold what other people say in confidence and want to be held the same way.
This is not for you if
- You are looking for a holiday, a reset, or a beautiful week that leaves your life unexamined.
- You want a facilitator who will agree with you.
- You are in acute crisis or currently need clinical care. This is not therapy and not a substitute for it. Come when you are steady enough to work.
- You are seeking a substance experience. That is not what this is, and applications framed that way are declined.
- You want certainty, a guaranteed outcome, or a method you can complete.
- You cannot commit to the full seven days, uninterrupted and without working.
- You want to document it. Phones are surrendered for most of the week and the cohort is not content.
Twelve places. Application only.
There is no booking button. Every place is filled by application and conversation, because who is in the room determines what is possible in it. Applying takes about fifteen minutes and asks you to be direct. If your application moves forward, we will speak with you personally before anything is confirmed. Dates, investment and logistics are shared at that stage.
Not ready to apply? .
Apply
Answer plainly. We are reading for honesty, not polish. Applications that sound like a cover letter are the easiest ones to decline.
Include your country code. This is how we reach you to arrange the conversation.
Answered honestly, this protects you. It is read only by the founders and it does not automatically disqualify an application.
We reply to every application, usually within seven days.
Write to us.
Sarmadwell is two people. Messages reach us directly and we answer them ourselves, which means we are slower than a support desk and considerably more useful.
